Description

More people have heard of the Blue Scaled Quail, Callipepla squamata, also known as the Texas Blue Scaled Quail, but less are aware of the various subspecies of Scaled Quail. There are 4 known subspecies of Blue Scaled Quail. We happen to breed Callipepla squamata castanogastris, known as the Chestnut-bellied Scaled Quail. This subspecies does exist in the wild but is rarely seen. The Chestnut-bellied Scaled Quail has been sighted in Western Texas in isolated areas. There are very few people that breed them in captivity. As a result, these quail are very rare.

Besides for their rarity, we also keep the Chestnut-bellied Scaled Quail because hunters enjoy the Scaled Quail in general. We figure that we could participate on various breeding programs to help increase the numbers of Chestnut-bellied Scaled Quail in the wild, in captivity for hobbyists, and for controlled programs that various hunting grounds provide. We can’t say we’ve tried their meat or their eggs since we are sparing them for breeding purposes only. They tend to be a little more flighty than the Valley Quail or the Northeastern Bobwhite, but once you provide them some wild bird seed frequently, they tend to calm down.
